When a friend came to me about creating a podcast based around watching movies and talking about them I couldn’t turn it down. It took a little bit of coordination to get off the ground, but now we have several dozen listeners, and growing subscribers.
If I’m being honest, people that listen are much more curious about the films than hearing what we have to say, but this project has allowed me to learn more about the world of podcasting, RSS feeds, and self-hosting both.
I created the logo we use, and also wrangled the WordPress theme to match the style we wanted and allow for multiple feeds of both long-form text reviews as well as audio reviews for movies and other content. We plan to keep expanding our reviews as we go along, and see how many subscribers we can earn along the way.
Version 2 (Released July 28th)
Unfortunately free podcasts don’t have a whole lot of options when it comes to analytics, to help this we changed the layout of our homepage to direct people straight to our latest episodes. I also added a link to the podcast on iTunes so we can start to drive more traffic there as well.
Since the change we’ve noticed we gained another 50 listens on the website itself, and an increase of 20 listeners on iTunes compared to the week before. These numbers are still small and almost insignificant because of external factors, but we’ll continue watching over the weeks and see if this strategy helps gain more listeners and subscribers.
